Day 7: Aviemore to Glenmore Lodge

The weather forecast was good for the next couple of days, so I went on the planned route through Ben Macdui. However, this was a three day route and Day 7 was a scheduled "rest" day; I walked just six miles from Aviemore to Glenmore Camp and Caravan site, along the Old Logging Way; quite an easy walk. I didn't see any challengers that day but there were a number of single-person tents in the camp site.

A pleasant view of Loch Morlich. When cars weren't driving by, it was a very tranquil setting in the low winds and evening sun.

I had some fish and chips in the Glenmore SYHA. Also the Caingorm Gold they sold there tasted good.

I felt fairly OK after waking up near the weir and packing up my tent. The weather was still a bit breezy and overcast but I made reasonable progress through the remaining parts of the wind farm. Day 10: Braemar to Gelder Shiel Bothy

After a comfortable night in the Invercauld Arms, where I took the opportunity to dry out my tent and wash some bits and pieces, I set off on a relatively short leg to Gelder Shiel via Balmoral. On the path to the Lion's Face, I met a guy called Colin who was doing the challenge for the second time. Then a bit further on, we saw Robert and Becky, looking for a way over the fence on to the Old Military Road. Eventually we all found a place; rather than climb a ladder, it was simpler to squeeze through a horizontal gap. Invercauld House viewed from Lion's Face Instead of taking the very short route to Geldler Shiel (only 10k or so), I wanted to go around Balmoral to see the sights. Day 14: Feteresso to Stonehaven

I noted an number of the others were finishing at Dunnotar Castle. That seemed a nice thing to do but I couldn't face the extra two miles or so, after tiring out my legs the previous day. It was a pleasant enough walk beside the river to get out to the Mergie Stables, at the edge of Feteresso. A few fine-looking horses were there and a troupe of small dogs were making a lot of noise as I walked past. Walk along the river from Stonehouse in Feteresso Forest Horses near Mergie stables It was a fairly easy but a bit boring road walk for 3-4 miles from there to town. The sun was not welcome at this point and there was no shelter on the exposed roads. I passed a few runners and cyclists but no other challengers. Recalling the mention of a tea shop in the Kirktown of Feteresso (possibly Ali Ogden said something about it when we were at Gelder Shiel), I decided to investigate.
